Since the formation of the NHL in 1917, only twelve 70-seasons have been entered in the league's books. Of these, seven have been recorded over the past 10 seasons by Wayne Gretzky and Brett Hull. These two superstars own the top three single - season marks in the game, with Gretzky registering 92 goals in 81-82 and 87 goals in 83 - 84 and Hull recording 86 goals in 90-91. In addition to these lofty totals, Gretzky and Hull have the distinction of being the only two NHLers to score 50 goals in 50- or-fewer games in back- to- back seasons. Scoring 5-n-50 is a rare occurrence for even the NHL's hottest shooters. It has only been done by five players, making the 50-in-50 club the NHL's most exclusive fraternity. Those who have recorded this milestone in the NHL are Gretzky, Hull, Maurice Richard, Mike Bossy and Mario Lemieux. Gretzky's back-to-back performances came in 83-84 and 84-85, Hulls occurred over the past two seasons. In all four instances, Gretzky and Hull led the NHL.
